Founded in 1967 and conducted for many years by the late Joseph Proctor, the Lewisham Concert Band soon found fame for its numerous BBC Radio 2 broadcasts during the ’70s and ’80s on Friday Night is Music Night and Listen to the Band. Today, under the musical direction of John Hargreaves, it is still one of London’s top wind bands and comprises both professional and high-standard amateur musicians. The band performs throughout the year, both in formal concert settings and summer bandstands and festivals.
South London Symphonic Winds is a community wind band based in Brixton which plays a wide range of classical arrangements, marches, popular music, and modern pieces. The band performs regularly around London and further afield. SLSW is part of the umbrella charity South London Community Music, which is dedicated to encouraging and fostering music-making with and for the community in a welcoming, supportive and inclusive atmosphere.
The Fabulous Honeys is London’s sweetest big band. It formed in 2015 as a (mostly) female big band and have gone from strength to strength since and plays exciting arrangements of swing music, with a little bit of latin, funk and blues thrown in for good measure.
