Magnolia – Magnolia Grandiflora
This evergreen variety of magnolia hails from the south-eastern United States. Its very large, scented flowers give rise to its name. Fossil and pollen evidence indicate that the genus Magnolia is one of the most ancient of flowering plants.
This recent addition (see pic) to the Dulwich Park tree stock , situated on the other side of the carriageway from the picnic area on the south side of the lake, comes courtesy of Dulwich Park Friend Mary Sutherland, who donated the magnificent specimen after it outgrew its location in a large tub in her front garden. Head Gardener Ric Glenn tells us that the team have planted three of these magnolias in the park in recent years.
